In 15 years of working with foreign riders, we have seen the same storage scenarios come up again and again. Here are the most common:
The Monsoon Pause (June to September)
Experienced India riders know that the Himalayan passes close during the height of monsoon season — typically late June to mid-September. The Manali-Leh highway and Spiti Valley become impassable or dangerous. Many foreign riders who have done the pre-monsoon Himalayan run choose to store their bikes in Delhi during this window, fly home for the summer, and return in September to continue riding. Storage for 3 to 4 months is common for this group.
The Visa Run
Many long-stay riders need to exit India periodically to renew their tourist visa. Rather than scrambling to sell the bike before leaving or leaving it with someone unreliable, they store it in Delhi for 1 to 4 weeks while they process their visa from Nepal, Sri Lanka, or Thailand. For riders who entered via Delhi, storing near the airport is particularly convenient — and our facility is reachable from IGI Airport in under 40 minutes.
The Side Trip
Some riders want to explore parts of India that are difficult by motorcycle — Kerala’s backwaters, Rajasthan’s desert forts, the Andaman Islands — or take a neighbouring country detour to Nepal without taking the bike across the border. Short-term storage for 2 to 3 weeks is the cleanest solution.
End-of-Season Storage Before Returning Home
Some riders buy a motorcycle outright for their India trip with the intention of selling it at the end. But sale prices often disappoint, especially in off-peak periods. Storing the bike through the off-season and returning to sell (or ride more) in the following peak season is increasingly the better financial choice.
How to Prepare Your Motorcycle for Storage in India
Whether you store with us or elsewhere, preparing your bike correctly before handing it over makes a significant difference to the condition it will be in when you return. Here is what we recommend:
Fuel
For storage periods under one month, leaving the tank full is fine. For longer storage, leaving a full tank helps prevent moisture build-up and rust. For carburetted motorcycles (older Royal Enfields), it is worth draining the carburettor float bowl to prevent fuel varnish — we do this as part of our long-term storage check-in.
Battery
A motorcycle left with its battery connected will lose charge over 4 to 6 weeks. We maintain stored bikes on periodic trickle charging, but for very long storage (3 months+), disconnecting the negative terminal before storage is good practice. We handle this during check-in if requested.
Tyres
Inflate tyres to the maximum recommended pressure before storage — slightly over the normal riding pressure. This reduces the flat-spot risk from the bike sitting stationary for weeks. We check and correct tyre pressure as part of our monthly check-up.
Chain and Drive Components
A clean, well-lubricated chain will not rust during storage. We apply chain lube at check-in for all stored bikes.
Documentation
Leave a photocopy of your bike’s RC (registration certificate), your passport, and Indian visa with us at check-in. This protects you legally and ensures we can deal with any queries about the vehicle during your absence. Foreign riders should also ensure their International Driving Permit remains valid for their return date.
What to Look for in Any Motorcycle Storage Facility in India
If you are not storing with us — or if you need storage in a city other than Delhi — here is what to look for when evaluating any facility:
Physical Security
The facility should have a locked, gated perimeter, CCTV coverage of the storage area, and on-site staff during at least daytime hours. Ask specifically: can anyone walk in off the street, or is access controlled? For a foreign traveller, this is the most critical question.
Covered vs Outdoor Storage
India’s climate is hard on motorcycles. The monsoon, Delhi’s dust storms, and 45°C summers will damage a bike left uncovered for months. Covered, indoor storage is worth paying extra for, particularly for premium motorcycles like the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450.
Maintenance During Storage
A good facility will not just park your bike and leave it for six months. Ask whether they carry out periodic checks on battery, tyres, and fuel. A bike left completely static for four months in Indian heat will not start smoothly on collection day without some attention.
Clear Terms and a Written Agreement
Any reputable storage facility will provide a written agreement covering duration, monthly rate, what is included, liability for damage, and the process for early collection. Avoid any arrangement made purely on a handshake with no documentation.
Location Relative to Your Route
If you are flying out and back into Delhi, storing near the capital makes logistical sense. If your route ends in a different city — Mumbai, Goa, Jaipur — look for storage options local to that endpoint.
Frequently Asked Questions — Motorcycle Storage in India for Foreigners
Can I store my motorcycle in India if I bought it privately, not through Stoneheadbikes?
Yes. We accept privately owned motorcycles for storage at our Delhi facility, not only bikes rented through us. Contact us with your bike model and intended storage duration for a quote. We will need a copy of the RC and your passport details at check-in.
What happens if my return date changes while my bike is in storage?
We understand that travel plans in India rarely stay fixed. We handle extensions on a rolling basis — simply WhatsApp us your new expected return date and we will adjust your storage arrangement accordingly. Pricing is prorated for extensions beyond your original period.
Is my motorcycle insured while in storage?
Your motorcycle’s own third-party insurance remains valid regardless of whether it is being ridden or stored. However, most third-party policies in India do not cover theft or accidental damage while in storage. We strongly recommend taking out comprehensive insurance (available through any general insurer in India) for the storage period, particularly for premium motorcycles. Ask us at check-in and we can point you in the right direction.

Can I collect my bike outside of business hours?
We ask for at least 12 hours’ advance notice before collection so we can carry out a pre-departure check, bring the battery up to full charge, and have paperwork ready. For early morning collections (before 8 AM), please notify us the previous evening.
I am flying back into Delhi and want to pick up my bike the same day. Is that possible?
Yes — and this is actually one of the most common collection scenarios. If you are landing at T3 (International), we also offer bike pickup at Aerocity Metro Station, 1 km from the terminal. For stored bikes, we can arrange to have your motorcycle ready for collection at our Vivek Vihar facility on the day of your arrival — give us your flight details when you book your collection.
