Itinerary

Manali to Leh Bike Trip: Day-by-Day Stage Guide

3-day recommended split — never rush this road.

Day 1
145 km
Manali → Jispa (via Rohtang Pass and Tandi)
Leave Manali by 6am — Rohtang Pass (3,978m) gets crowded and cloudy by 10am. Carry Rohtang Pass permit (required for private vehicles, book online 24hr in advance). After Rohtang, road quality drops significantly through Gramphu. Tandi is your last petrol station before Leh — fill up completely here. Overnight at Jispa or Keylong.
Day 2
165 km
Jispa → Sarchu (via Baralacha La and Gata Loops)
Baralacha La (4,890m) is the first serious high-altitude pass of the Manali to Leh highway. After the pass, the 21 hairpin Gata Loops climb steeply — take it slow. Sarchu sits at 4,253m and many riders experience altitude symptoms here. Overnight at Sarchu in tented camps. Carry altitude medication.
Day 3
169 km
Sarchu → Leh (via Nakee La, Lachulung La, Tanglang La, More Plains)
The most dramatic day on the Manali to Leh road trip. Tanglang La at 5,328m is the highest point on the entire route. More Plains is a vast, Mars-like plateau. Arrive in Leh by 4pm ideally — acclimatise for 2 days before riding further. Do not push straight to Khardung La or Pangong on arrival day.
2-Day Option
Not advised
Manali → Sarchu (Day 1) → Leh (Day 2)
Possible but not recommended. Pushing 300km on Day 2 at altitude above 4,000m is physically demanding and reduces your margin if anything goes wrong with the bike or weather. First-timers should always take 3 days.

Lachulung La4,933m / 16,184 ftDay 3Patches of gravel, manageable

Bike Selection

Best Bike for the Manali to Leh Bike Trip

One recommendation that covers 95% of riders.

The best bike for the Manali to Leh road trip is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 for most riders — it has the ground clearance for rough BRO roads, adequate power at altitude, and the most widely available spare parts and service network in Ladakh. Rental Options

Renting a Bike for the Manali to Leh Bike Trip

Two pickup options depending on your flight route.

You have two main options for renting a bike for this Manali to Leh road trip, depending on whether you fly into Delhi or Manali.

Option 1: Rent from Delhi, Ride to Manali

Most international riders fly into Delhi, making this the default route. Pick up your bike in Delhi and ride to Manali (570 km, 10–11 hours — ideally broken into 2 days via Chandigarh). Stoneheadbikes offers Delhi to Ladakh bike rental with all documentation, insurance, and 24/7 support included.

Option 2: Rent in Leh, Ride the Srinagar Route, Return via Manali

Fly into Leh directly, ride the Srinagar-Leh route one way, and return via Manali (or vice versa). This is the classic loop. For bikes rented locally in Leh, Stoneheadbikes’ Leh fleet uses locally registered Yellow Number Plate bikes — mandatory for riding within Ladakh Union Territory.

Yellow Number Plate Rule — Important

Bikes rented outside Ladakh (Delhi, Manali) cannot be ridden within Leh city and Ladakh Union Territory for day trips. You need a locally registered (Yellow plate) bike for Nubra, Pangong, and other Ladakh excursions. Read our full Ladakh permit and bike rule guide before booking.

1Book at least 3 weeks in advance
Himalayan 450 and 411 bikes sell out in peak season (July–August). Last-minute bookings mean less choice.
2Confirm insurance covers high-altitude routes
Standard third-party insurance is included. Comprehensive coverage is recommended for Ladakh due to remote breakdown risk.
3Foreign riders need IDP + Passport + Visa
See our complete guide for foreign riders for documentation requirements.
