Why Chandigarh is the Best Starting Point for Your India Motorcycle Journey
Most international riders fly into Delhi — but experienced travellers take a 3-hour Shatabdi Express train or a short domestic flight to Chandigarh (airport code: IXC), and here is exactly why it changes everything.
Chandigarh sits at the foothills of the Himalayas, with National Highway 5 (the Shimla Highway) and National Highway 3 (the Manali Highway) both within an hour's comfortable ride of the city centre. This single geographic advantage shaves 250 kilometres off the classic Delhi-Manali stretch — reducing your first riding day from a gruelling 9-hour highway slog to a relaxed 5-hour mountain run. You arrive fresher, earlier, and with far more energy for the riding ahead.
Built by the legendary architect Le Corbusier, Chandigarh is also one of India's most organised and rider-friendly cities — with wide, well-maintained roads, clear signage in English, and minimal traffic congestion compared to Delhi or Mumbai.
What to Expect When You Arrive at Chandigarh Airport (IXC)
Stoneheadbikes offers free pickup coordination from Chandigarh International Airport (IATA: IXC) and Chandigarh Railway Station. Our team will contact you 24 hours before your collection time with exact GPS coordinates, WhatsApp contact number, and a detailed pre-ride checklist in English.
We cater to foreign nationals on a daily basis. Our rental team speaks English fluently and understands the practical concerns of international riders — from fuel quality and road conditions to permit requirements and police checkpoint protocol. We will answer every question before you leave the pickup point.
Documentation — Simplified for International Tourists
Renting a motorcycle in India as a foreign national is completely legal and straightforward when you work with an authorised, experienced operator. Here is exactly what you need:
- 1. A valid passport (original, not a photocopy).
- 2. An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by your home country's automobile association (AA in the UK, AAA in the USA, ADAC in Germany, NRMA in Australia, etc.). The IDP must include motorcycle (Category A) coverage.
- 3. Your original home-country driving licence (carried alongside the IDP at all times).
We handle all Indian-side paperwork including comprehensive insurance, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, and digital vehicle registration via the official Parivahan app — which is legally accepted and recognised at all police checkpoints across India, including state borders and Inner Line Permit checkpoints in Ladakh.
| Motorcycle Model | Best For | Daily Rate (approx.) |

| Royal Enfield Classic 350 | Heritage tours, comfortable cruising | ₹1,200 |

| Bajaj Avenger 220 | Budget-friendly long-distance riding | ₹1,000 |
Recommended Motorcycles for the Himalayan Routes
For the Leh-Ladakh route, we specifically recommend the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 or the KTM Adventure 390. Both motorcycles are proven performers at altitudes above 5,400 metres (Khardung La Pass) and come equipped with ABS, fuel injection, and long-travel suspension suited for mixed-terrain mountain riding.
For the Spiti Valley Circuit, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 EFI with ABS is our most popular choice among experienced international tourers — its manageable power delivery, strong fuel range, and parts availability across Himachal Pradesh make it ideal for this remote route.
For riders planning weekend rides to Kasauli, Chail, Morni Hills, or the Shivalik foothills, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 offers outstanding riding comfort, iconic style, and completely reliable performance on smooth mountain roads.
Safety, Insurance and 24/7 Roadside Assistance
Every motorcycle rental from Stoneheadbikes includes comprehensive third-party insurance as standard. Gear rentals — including ISI-certified full-face helmets, CE-rated riding jackets (XS to 3XL), gloves, knee guards, and waterproof saddlebags — are available as optional additions and should be booked in advance during peak season (June to September).
Our 24/7 roadside assistance is staffed by riders, not call-centre agents. They understand what a breakdown at 4,200 metres actually means and have a network of trusted mechanics across Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. In the rare event of a mechanical issue, we will coordinate either an on-ground mechanic or a replacement motorcycle to your location.
FAQs for International Travelers
Do I need an Indian driving licence to rent a motorcycle in Chandigarh?
No. Foreign nationals can ride legally across India using a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their original home-country driving licence. Your IDP must include motorcycle (Category A) coverage. We strongly advise obtaining your IDP before arriving in India, as it cannot be issued inside the country. Stoneheadbikes accepts IDPs from all countries that are signatories to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
What is the best motorcycle to rent in Chandigarh for the Ladakh trip?
We recommend the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 for its ABS, fuel injection, long-travel suspension, and proven performance at altitudes above 5,400 metres. If you prefer a more aggressive riding posture and higher top speed, the KTM Adventure 390 is our second recommendation. Both motorcycles are maintained specifically for high-altitude Himalayan conditions and have been ridden to Khardung La Pass (5,359 metres) thousands of times by our customers.
Can I pay the security deposit using an international credit card or PayPal?
Yes. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, and SWIFT bank transfers from international accounts. Security deposits are fully refundable within 3 to 5 working days of returning the motorcycle in the agreed condition. We issue a digital receipt for all transactions. There are no hidden fees or forced add-ons.
Is there a minimum rental period for outstation trips from Chandigarh?
For city riding within Chandigarh and the Chandigarh-Pinjore-Morni Hills circuit, the minimum rental is 1 day. For outstation trips to Shimla, Manali, or Leh-Ladakh, we recommend a minimum of 3 days to allow proper route planning and weather buffer days. For the complete Chandigarh-Manali-Leh-Ladakh circuit, most international riders book 12 to 18 days.
Do you offer one-way motorcycle rentals — pick up in Chandigarh, drop off in Leh or Manali?
Yes. We offer one-way motorcycle rentals between Chandigarh, Manali, and Leh-Ladakh for a one-way transfer surcharge. This is extremely popular with international riders who fly into Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) and fly out of Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh, or vice versa. Contact us to check availability and pricing for your specific travel dates.
Can I take the motorcycle to Nepal or other neighbouring countries?
We offer a dedicated Nepal motorcycle rental service with the correct cross-border documentation from our Delhi flagship location. For rides to Nepal starting from Chandigarh, we recommend picking up in Delhi or arranging for a permit-ready motorcycle. Please contact us at least 2 weeks in advance for Nepal cross-border rentals, as the paperwork requires advance preparation.
What riding gear can I rent alongside the motorcycle?
We offer ISI-certified full-face helmets, CE-rated motorcycle jackets (sizes XS to 3XL), leather and textile gloves, knee and shin guards, and waterproof saddlebags or panniers. Gear rental is charged separately from the motorcycle rate and can be added at the time of booking. We strongly recommend booking all gear at least 2 weeks in advance during peak Himalayan season (June to September) to guarantee your size and preferred style.
How are rental days calculated, and what is the fuel policy?
We operate on a strict 24-hour clock. If you collect the motorcycle at 10:00 AM on Day 1, it is due back by 10:00 AM on the final day. Late returns are charged at a half-day rate per additional 12 hours. Fuel policy is full-to-full — you collect the bike with a full tank and return it with a full tank. You are responsible for all fuel costs during the rental period.
