Highway riding until Kalka, then a fun twisty climb through pine forests to Shimla. Fill the tank fully in Chandigarh — last easy top-up before the hills start. Overnight: Shimla (max altitude 2,200m). Day 2 ~175 km 6–7 hrs Shimla → Sarahan Via Narkanda and Rampur — apple orchards and deodar forests. One of the most scenic stretches of the whole trip. Good day to get used to the bike loaded with luggage. Visit the Bhimakali Temple in Sarahan in the evening. Overnight: Sarahan (2,165m). Day 3 ~105 km 5–6 hrs Sarahan → Sangla → Chitkul Enter the Sangla Valley — dramatic gorge riding along the Baspa river. Chitkul is the last inhabited village before the Indo-Tibet border. No permit required for Chitkul (it’s below the Inner Line). Short riding day — use the extra time to walk the village and start acclimatising. Overnight: Chitkul (3,450m) or Sangla if Chitkul is cold/closed. Day 4 ~70 km 3–4 hrs Chitkul → Kalpa / Reckong Peo PERMIT DAY Short, easy day — deliberately light because this is permit day. Head to Reckong Peo SDM office to process the Inner Line Permit (see Permits section). Spend the afternoon in Kalpa for the classic Kinner Kailash range view. Overnight: Kalpa (2,960m). Day 5 ~165 km 6–7 hrs Reckong Peo → Nako → Tabo Longest riding day — Powari, Jangi, Spillow, and the dramatic cliff-hugging road above the Sutlej gorge. Day 9 ~110 km 5–6 hrs Chandratal → Manali (via Atal Tunnel) Batal–Gramphu–Manali road, then through the Atal Tunnel which bypasses old Rohtang Pass and saves a couple of hours. Dropping 2,000m+ in altitude in one day — noticeably warmer, oxygen-rich air by evening. Hot shower and good food await. Overnight: Manali (2,050m). Day 10 Local only Rest day Manali — Rest Day / Old Manali & Solang Built-in buffer. Permits for Foreign Riders: Inner Line Permit (ILP) Indian nationals need no permit for Kinnaur or Spiti. Foreign nationals do — this is the single most important piece of paperwork on this trip. Day 4 is deliberately a short riding day specifically to process the permit without rushing. Where to Get It: SDM Office, Reckong Peo The Reckong Peo SDM office is far less crowded than Shimla’s Sugam Centre, with faster processing and on-the-spot webcam photos. Also processed at Shimla, Kaza SDM, and Keylong DM — but Reckong Peo is the best fit for this specific route. Documents needed Original passport + 2–3 photocopies, visa copy, 2 passport-size photographs, completed application form (available at the counter) Processing time Typically 2–4 hours same day — reach Reckong Peo by late morning to finish comfortably Validity Typically 7–15 days — more than enough, but double-check the exact validity written on the permit before leaving the counter Where it’s checked Sumdo check post (Kinnaur–Spiti border) — a copy is retained here, so carry 4–5 photocopies Online? No — cannot be applied for online. Must be obtained in person. For the full permit picture covering Ladakh zones, Nubra, Pangong, and Hanle, read our complete permit guide for foreign riders. Critical Planning Fuel Planning: Spiti Valley Motorcycle Route The Kaza–Chandratal–Manali leg has no petrol pump. Carry a spare 5L can. Leg Last Reliable Pump Next Pump After Shimla → Sangla / Chitkul Rampur / Jeori — top up here Reckong Peo (Powari) Reckong Peo → Tabo Powari / Reckong Peo — fill completely Kaza (Tabo pump unreliable/seasonal) Kaza loop day Fill full in Kaza before the loop Back in Kaza ⚠ Kaza → Chandratal → Manali Fill FULL in Kaza + carry 5L spare can No pump until Manali — critical leg SIM Card & Connectivity Get your SIM at Delhi airport (IGI Terminal 3) on arrival day — Airtel, Jio, and Vi counters are in the arrivals hall just past customs. Carry your passport (mandatory for KYC). Activation takes 2–24 hours, so buy it Day 1 rather than waiting. Expect patchy-to-no signal for most of the Kinnaur–Spiti–Chandratal stretch. BSNL/Jio postpaid works best in Kaza where coverage exists at all. ⚠ Non-negotiable: Download offline maps (Google Maps offline or Maps.me) in Delhi before departing. Do not rely on live navigation for any section of this route beyond Rampur. Gear & Kit Checklist for the Spiti Valley Motorcycle Route Riding Gear Full-face helmet (ISI/DOT/ECE), riding jacket with CE armour, riding pants with knee armour, waterproof gloves (summer pair + insulated pair for Kunzum/Chandratal), ankle-covering waterproof boots, rain cover. Cold Layers Down/thermal jacket (Kaza nights can drop below 0°C even in summer), thermal base layers x2, woollen cap, sleeping bag liner for Chandratal camps. Medical Diamox (consult doctor before trip), personal first aid kit, ibuprofen, ORS sachets, pulse oximeter, sunscreen SPF 50+, lip balm with SPF, UV-protection sunglasses. Documents Passport + 4–5 photocopies, visa copy, Inner Line Permit + copies, IDP (foreign riders), rental agreement, insurance papers. Cash in Indian Rupees — ATMs unreliable beyond Reckong Peo, carry enough for 5–6 days. Bike Kit Basic toolkit (bike comes equipped), tyre puncture repair kit, tyre pump, 4–5L spare fuel can (mandatory from Kaza), dry bags for panniers, water bottle + purification tablets. Challenges You Will Face on the Spiti Valley Motorcycle Route Altitude Sickness Kaza, Kunzum, Chandratal, and Komic are all above 3,500m. Watch for headache, nausea, breathlessness. This itinerary is built with short days specifically to acclimatise gradually. Do not push through symptoms — descend if they worsen. Landslides The Kinnaur Spiti circuit section from Powari–Jangi–Spillow and Kaza–Gramphu belt are landslide-prone, especially Jul–early Sep. Build in slack days and check local road status each morning before departing. No Fuel / Network Kaza to Manali via Chandratal: no petrol pump and patchy-to-zero mobile network for the better part of a day. Fill tank + carry 5L spare, download offline maps, tell someone your plan before departing. River Crossings After crossing Kunzum Pass on your motorcycle, a few water crossings near Chandratal/Batal after snowmelt or rain. Cross slowly in first/second gear, feet up, and walk the crossing first if unsure of depth. Weather Swings Bright sun at midday can turn to sleet at high passes by afternoon. Layer clothing and carry rain gear even on a clear morning. Never ride after dark on Kinnaur/Spiti roads — no lighting, road edges, and animals.
